Dr. Robert Balkan is a board-certified ophthalmologist with a special interest in children’s eye diseases and adult eye muscle disorders. He has over twenty-five years experience in ophthalmology. He is well recognized for using “magic” to calm and entertain children while obtaining the necessary exam information.
He completed his medical degree from Rush Medical University in Chicago, his home town. After a medical internship and ophthalmology residency at the “Ochsner Foundation”, he furthered his studies in “rare eye diseases and strabismus (misaligned eyes)” at UC San Francisco. He was in the original Botulism (now Botox) FDA clinical trial, and one of the first doctors in New Orleans to use it, to treat facial and eye muscle disorders.
He continues to be a leader in its functional as well as cosmetic uses. Dr. Robert Balkan has written several key articles and edited two ophthalmology books.
He is a past president of the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology and past president of the Eye Ear Nose and Throat Hospital medical staff. His hobbies include sculpture, photography, and magic.
